World renowned reggae artist, Lucky Dube, murdered

Friday, October 19th, 2007

Lucky Dube, concert 2005This is a terrible tragedy. Lucky Dube was apparently shot and killed in an attempted car jacking in Johannesburg. Lucky Dube wrote and sang some of the most beautiful old-school, “roots rock reggae” music albums. He also was an influential social activist for black South Africans, bringing attention since the 1980’s to political and social injustices in South Africa and the African continent.

Clyde and the “Top 100 Beats of All Time”

Monday, October 8th, 2007

Clyde You have to love this.

Who topped Led Zepplin’s John Bonham and “When the Levee Breaks” to take the #1 All Time “Best Beat” in the June 2007 issue of Rhythm Magazine (from ‘Gods of Thunder’ blog), beating out other drum legends like Zigaboo Modeliste (The Meters), Phil Rudd (AC/DC), Keith Moon (The Who), Gene Krupa (The Benny Goodman Orchestra) and Joe Morello (Dave Brubeck)?

Well, Clyde Stubblefield and “The Funky Drummer Parts 1 & 2″ beat, of course!

But wait, that’s not all! Clyde not only was credited with the #1 drum beat of all time, he was also the only drummer to appear TWICE in the Top 10 for his drum work in the James Brown classic, “Cold Sweat,” coming in at #10.

Hit me one time…now, hit me TWO TIMES!

Clyde Stubblefield…KEEPIN’ THE FUNK ALIVE!!!

For the record, the list was determined by the editors of Rhythm Magazine and and an all-star panel consisting of drummers like Carl Palmer (ELP), Bill Bruford (King Crimson) and Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) pick “The Top 100 Beats of All Time.” Wow, now that’s respect from your peers!!!

Thomas Buckner and Friends
New music baritone Thomas Buckner and an all-star ensemble will present an evening of improvisations along with two compositions that use improvisation in widely divergent ways. The concert will explore the relationship of composition and improvisation, showing some of the ways free improvisation has expanded the sound palate and expressive power of new music.

The group includes two AACM originals on woodwinds: Roscoe Mitchell, of Art Ensemble of Chicago fame, with whom Buckner has performed and recorded for over 30 years, and Douglas Ewart, for whose unique talents one of the pieces in the concert, “Joe Hill Fantasy”, was composed by the Chicago-based composer Peter Gena, who will also perform on computer. Rounding out the ensemble are the pianist “Blue” Gene Tyranny, with whom Buckner has worked in various contexts for 20 years, computer wizard David Wessel, with whom Buckner began to explore free improvisation in 1965, and the remarkable German composer and percussionist Matthias Kaul.
