Recreating “In The Jungle Groove”
Wednesday, March 29th, 2006
It’s hard to believe that over 35 years have passed by since James Brown’s “In The Jungle Groove” was release to the world. This album is THE album that made Clyde Stubblefield famous, forever earning him the title the Original Funky Drummer. The album’s grooves have been sampled by literally thousands of artists. Probably no other recorded drum beat in the last century groove is more familiar than the Funky Drummer groove heard on this album (hear the sample from Amazon.com).
So with that background information, it gives me great pleasure to announce that on April 21st at the High Noon Saloon (shows at 8 and 11pm), The Gomers will be performing a recreation of the “In The Jungle Groove” album in its entirety featuring none other than the Funky Drummer himself, Clyde Stubblefield. The show will also include a recreation performance of the Talking Heads “Remain in the Light” album to start.
The only thing more exciting than attending the shows would be playing in them, which I’m excited to announce we’ll be doing! The Gomers have hired the Clyde Band’s horn section to fill in for Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, PeeWee Ellis and the rest (they’re presumably busy with other projects). Our goal is to nail this gig. We’ve already begun transcribing the horn parts and should have everything wrapped up before our first rehearsal. It is an honor to have the opportunity to contribute to this rare and historical project. Kudos to The Gomers for making it happen!
