Recreating “In The Jungle Groove”

Album cover - In The Jungle Groove

It’s hard to believe that over 35 years have passed by since James Brown’s “In The Jungle Groove” was release to the world. This album is THE album that made Clyde Stubblefield famous, forever earning him the title the Original Funky Drummer. The album’s grooves have been sampled by literally thousands of artists. Probably no other recorded drum beat in the last century groove is more familiar than the Funky Drummer groove heard on this album (hear the sample from Amazon.com).

So with that background information, it gives me great pleasure to announce that on April 21st at the High Noon Saloon (shows at 8 and 11pm), The Gomers will be performing a recreation of the “In The Jungle Groove” album in its entirety featuring none other than the Funky Drummer himself, Clyde Stubblefield. The show will also include a recreation performance of the Talking Heads “Remain in the Light” album to start.

The only thing more exciting than attending the shows would be playing in them, which I’m excited to announce we’ll be doing! The Gomers have hired the Clyde Band’s horn section to fill in for Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, PeeWee Ellis and the rest (they’re presumably busy with other projects). Our goal is to nail this gig. We’ve already begun transcribing the horn parts and should have everything wrapped up before our first rehearsal. It is an honor to have the opportunity to contribute to this rare and historical project. Kudos to The Gomers for making it happen!

Eric Koppa and Bryan Husk jamming
Eric Koppa stopped up this past weekend for a Treologic gig at the High Noon Saloon. The visit gave us yet another opportunity to play together and for me to absorb as much knowledge from the newly wed (see the January 2006 post) sax guru as I could.

The photo above is a cool one for a variety of reasons, not the least of which being that that’s my alto Eric is playing, the 21 year old Selmer my parents bought for me in 8th grade under the condition that I would keep playing it. It’s probably been one of the longest promises I’ve ever kept.

Check out the large version of the above photo to see the other cool things present in the room.

So even though my day job is as a web and IT guy, I’m afraid I haven’t kept up with the latest big thing for musicians on the Internet. Last month I had about six different people from all different friend networks ask me if I was on myspace and if not, then why? I admit it–I hadn’t even heard of myspace!

But being halfway technically savvy and unafraid of trying new things, I signed up for a free myspace account and completed the necessary profile info, etc. I still need to upload some music, but at least I’m there now.

What’s cool is discovering how many other friends are active on myspace, including many Madison musicians (some of whom I play with regularly) and even some old high school buddies (’sup Dan Gillespie?!). It’s all pretty cool!

So here’s a link to my profile. http://www.myspace.com/bryanhusk
